What this library is
OZB’s Microbiology Handout Library is a collection of short teaching documents about the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases, written for infectious diseases fellows, clinical pathology residents, and microbiology laboratory staff. It exists to support teaching and self-directed study.
It is the independent personal work of Omar Z. Baba, MD, produced outside of and separate from any employment, clinical appointment, or institutional role.
What this library is not
It is not medical advice and does not establish a physician–patient relationship.
It is not a clinical practice guideline, a standard of care, a protocol, or a standard operating procedure, and must not be adopted as one.
It is not a laboratory procedure, method validation, or verification document under CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189 or any other accreditation standard, and must not be used to satisfy any such requirement.
It is not a medical device, a diagnostic aid, or clinical decision support software, and it has not been cleared, approved or authorised by the Food and Drug Administration or any other regulatory authority.
It is not a substitute for the independent professional judgement of a qualified clinician or laboratory director.
No institutional affiliation
This library is not produced, sponsored, endorsed, reviewed or approved by any employer, hospital, health system, academic institution, professional society, government body, or commercial manufacturer.
Any institutional names, assay names, product names or trademarks that appear are used descriptively for educational identification only. Their use implies no affiliation with, or endorsement by, their owners.
Views expressed are those of the author alone and do not represent the views, policies, or procedures of any organisation with which the author is or has been associated.
Accuracy, currency and local practice
Content is prepared with care and checked by the author before publication, but no representation is made that any part of it is accurate, complete, or current, and author checking is not the independent peer review the reviewed badge records. Medical and laboratory knowledge changes continuously; material here may become outdated without notice.
Laboratory practice is local. Assay availability, analytical methods, specimen requirements, units, decision thresholds, reference intervals, reporting conventions and turnaround times vary between laboratories and change over time.
Before acting on anything in this library, you must independently confirm it against your own laboratory’s validated procedures, the current manufacturer instructions for use, the current package insert, and applicable professional guidelines.
What the reviewed badge means
Reviewed means a named subject-matter expert read this handout for teaching accuracy on the date shown. It is not a laboratory validation, not a certification, not a guarantee of accuracy, and not clearance for clinical use.
A reviewer’s name recorded against a handout indicates only that the named individual read that handout for teaching accuracy on the date shown, in their personal capacity. It does not commit their employer, does not constitute a professional opinion relied upon by any third party, and creates no duty of care to any reader or patient.
The absence of the badge means no external review has been recorded yet. It does not imply the content is wrong, and its presence does not imply the content is right.
No patient information
This library contains no protected health information. Any clinical scenario described is illustrative, composite, or drawn from published literature, and does not describe an identifiable patient.
Do not submit protected health information, patient identifiers, or confidential institutional material through any form in this library, including the feedback form.
Access and permitted use
Access is granted by code to named individuals for their own teaching and study. Do not redistribute access codes, and do not republish, sell, or present this material as your own or as the product of any institution.
Handouts may be printed and shared for non-commercial teaching within your own group provided the footer, attribution and disclaimers remain intact and unaltered.
Access may be modified or withdrawn at any time, and the library may change or be removed without notice.
Disclaimer of warranty and limitation of liability
This library is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including without limitation any implied warranty of accuracy, completeness, currency, non-infringement, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the author and any contributing reviewer shall have no liability for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss, injury, or harm to any person, arising out of or in connection with the use of, or reliance on, this material — including any clinical decision made wholly or partly on the basis of it.
You assume full responsibility for your use of this material and for your own professional judgement. If you do not accept these terms, do not use this library.
Reporting a problem
If you believe anything here is wrong, unsafe, out of date, or inconsistent with your laboratory’s practice, please report it using the feedback link on any page. Corrections are welcomed and acted on, but no commitment is made to any response time.
These terms are provided in good faith by a non-lawyer and are not legal advice. They may be updated without notice; the version in force is the one shown here.
